Aboriginal basketball star Tyson Mckenzie had his trip to China postponed indefinitely last week due to coronavirus fears.
The lockdown in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, has sparked fears of more cases in China and there are growing concerns about how the outbreak in Wuhan, where the new virus was first detected, will spread around the world.
Tyson Mckenzie, a basketball player for the Aboriginal Warriors and the first Australian to play in China, has cancelled his trip to Beijing.
“I have some family members that are sick,” he told the Nine Network.
“We are playing for Australia but we want to be there for our family.
“We have to be there for them. I have to have them in my life and my life depends on them being in my life. I don’t want to be there right now.”
China has confirmed 77 cases and confirmed the death of a Wuhan resident, an incident that has spooked financial markets and prompted a travel warning from the Australian government.
Foreign Minister Marise Payne said she had asked the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to assess the situation in Beijing in the event Australia was forced to cancel its trip to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
Numerous Australian tourists have been evacuated from Wuhan and the Australian government is now advising anyone planning to travel to China or Hong Kong to keep an eye on the media for travel advice.
“It’s obviously a matter of concern,” Ms Payne said.
“It’s very early on, but obviously the risk of infection is always a concern.”
A state of emergency was declared in NSW as people had become so concerned about the virus that they were stocking up on bottled water and face masks.
Ms Payne said she had also spoken with the state’s chief medical officer John Moore who “is closely monitoring the situation and is satisfied that Australia is in a good position to respond to the situation”.
Ms Payne said Australia was “quite alert” and “very well prepared” for a large scale outbreak but it would be a very different situation from when a “small number of cases” were detected in Wuhan.
